Dirk van der Kooij first fell in love with low resolution 3D printing as a student, fulfilling his search for honest and functional ornamentation. The chubby chair remains his most playful child of this process, which finds its alien form through the limitations of a self-developed, plastic extruding robot.
Designed in 2012, the chubby maintains an keystone position in the Kooij catalogue. It is held in the permanent collections of the Vitra Design Museum and The Design Museum in London.

Each chubby is printed from 10kg of chipped, recycled fridge interiors. Or, more poetically, one standard fridge.
The extrusion process involves heating the recycled plastic to a semi-molten state before layering hot ribbons atop one another. Given the recycled nature of the source material, the texture of the final product can vary from matte to glossy, sandy to smooth. Colour expression depends upon the past life of the material, and also varies in intensity from batch to batch. The Chubby can be cleaned with dish detergent and pressue-washed if need be. Do not clean with abrasive materials or allow to come into contact with acetone.
